We Are On Facebook! For those of you who are currently members of Facebook, you can "friend" us now. For those of you who aren't members, you can still see our Facebook page via our website. On the far left-hand side of the web pages is the "find us on Facebook" logo, which has a direct link to our Westshore Family & Cosmetic Dentistry Facebook page. Just click on the logo and it will take you to our page even if you are not a Facebook member. Computers Are In Our Treatment RoomsThe next time that you are in our office, you may see that we have added computers to our treatment rooms . We will be able to reserve your future re-care hygiene visits and check appointment times right from the room that you are in. Down the road we are hoping to change our already low dose X Ray machines to a digital format. This will enable us to lower dosage even more and save your radiographs to the computer instead of taking up lots of space in a chart. Gift Certificates AvailableFYI: Our office offers gift certificates for procedures such as teeth whitening via ZOOM Whitening or home tray whitening. Dr. Mizumoto is excited to be one of six general dentists on the west-side to be invited to join The Spear Study Club, a special group of dentists dedicated to furthering their education in comprehensive treatment planning and advanced dental techniques. The group was founded by Dr. Everett Wu, a periodontist in Fairview Park. They meet once per month for an in depth discussion of advanced clinical cases, and will be traveling to Arizona in March 2012 to attend a course dealing with the treatment of worn down teeth. When asked about his study club, Dr. Mizumoto states "I am excited about the opportunity to surround myself with such a talented group of clinicians. Being able to meet with a periodontist, orthodontist, and several well respected general dentists once per month will undoubtedly improve my ability as a clinician , and will help my patients to achieve their oral health goals."
Immunization To Prevent Cavities May Be Available In The FutureIn an article on Medscape.Com, Laird Harrison discusses a study conducted by researchers at Ghen, a Japanese biotechnology company. In the August 2011 issue of Journal of the American Dental Association, the Ghen researchers presented the results of utilizing lozenges that contained a chicken egg yolk antibody to inhibit Streptococcus mutans, a type of bacteria that has been shown to be a causative agent in dental cavities. Researchers had forty-nine test subjects use the lozenges and found that most of them had reduced or no colonies of the Streptococcus mutans bacteria in their mouths. The subjects had a lozenge after every meal, at 3 pm and at bedtime every day for a period of five days. Participants who received a placebo showed no statistical change in reducing or eliminating the bacteria. While their research does show promise for a possible cavity inhibitor in the future, it actually isn't that close to becoming available. Researchers said that they would need to do clinical trials to prove that the egg yolk antibodies can effectively prevent cavities in humans. Previous studies have shown that it does decrease the number of cavities in rats though. Dr. Nguyen (one of the researchers) is quoted as saying that "To measure clinical endpoints means a big clinical trial. And we will need quite {a lot of} money." Bad news though for you non-flossers. Even if this treatment becomes available in the future, people will still need to floss, brush and use fluoride to prevent cavities because inhibiting the Streptococcus mutans bacteria is only one part of the equation in preventing cavities. Heather and Colleen Attended The Ohio Dental Hygiene Association MeetingHeather, and Colleen recently went to the Ohio Dental Hygiene Association (ODHA) Annual Session at Cherry Valley Lodge. While there, they attended numerous meetings and met many other registered dental hygienists. They got to be alternate delegates and watch the proceedings of how officers are elected and how the By Laws pertaining to dental hygiene are written and voted on. Dental Hygiene students had "science fair" type projects displayed pertaining to the latest research in health and dentistry. The students gave presentations about their projects and chosen area of discussion. It was a great opportunity for Colleen and Heather to meet some of our future dental hygienists and to learn about what they had researched. Of course, Colleen and Heather took some time out for meals ! They attended a breakfast that included a ticket auction to raise money for the ODHA. Kathleen generously donated a one half hour massage and Heather, Julie and Linda added some spa -type items to complete the spa basket. It looked fantastic and got lots of bids. Heather and Colleen also attended a legislative luncheon and went to dinner with some hygienists from the local Lorain, Ohio component of the ODHA. Just in case you can't identify them without a mask and safety goggles on, Heather is on the left and Colleen is on the right in the photo below :)
